Dan Shot

Welcome to MixYourOwnMusic.net! Im Dan Pfeffer. Ive worked professionally as a mix engineer for the last decade and for the past 4 years have been the owner and head mix engineer of my own facility in Brooklyn, NY. Ive mixed and worked with every caliber and level of artist ranging from major label, indie label acts to new up and coming artists trying to make it on their own. I have numerous album credits to my name as well as my hand in countless radio, TV, and movie spots.

I decided to start this website to give musicians and audio engineers a resource that truly shows the ins and outs, secrets and techniques of professional mixing. Early on in my career I was always seeking out knowledge on how to get a great sounding mix. I would read all the books, watch educational videos, sit in on endless sessions with other engineers, go to seminars, and of course scour the internet for any tips or techniques that would get my mixes sounding better. I always found that the information available was very general, as if the people who knew how to get great sounding mixes weren’t talking. The information out there always seemed to be basic and vague. In a cut-throat business such as the music industry I could understand why people were so guarded but it was incredibly frustrating. For example I can’t remember how many times i’d want to know how to mix a great sounding vocal and get answers like “just use your ears” or if i’d ask what type of reverb to use on a rock song id get answers like “whatever type you think captures the vibe of the track.” Ahhh! This would drive me nuts. Show me some actual settings! Show me what compressor you are using! What exact reverb do you use! Now this is why I started MixYourOwnMusic.net and this is exactly what I show you. I made this website to be everything I wanted in a website when I was learning.

I named the site Mix Your Own Music because these days most audio engineers start out working on their own music. Trying to get their songs sounding as good as the pros. Don’t let it fool you though, this site is designed as a resource for every level of audio engineer. Ive split the site into sections. Mixing 101 teaches you the basics of mixing as well as terms you might be unfamiliar with. Advance Techniques starts getting into some specific techniques and secrets used by pro mix engineers. Mixing Secrets Revealed is where I show all. This is where you’ll see pieces of actual mixes ive done broken down and explained. You can look at all the actual settings I used as well as the reasons why I used them. The Gear/Insights/Random section is where I include other very helpful articles that don’t fit into any of the other categories. I wanted this section to be a great resource for aspiring musicians so ive made it a point to include articles that will help you in your career as a musician.

Mix Your Own Music will not only going to give you all the knowledge you need to get your mixes sounding pro, it will also give you the tools to further your career as a musician and an audio engineer.
