How do you get your music on iTunes? This is a very important question. As an up and coming artist, being on iTunes is an absolute must. CD sales just keep falling year after year. The record buying audience keeps wanting their music cheaper, quicker and easier, so where do they turn? Well assuming they’re not stealing it, they’re all going to iTunes. iTunes has become incredibly popular. Almost everyone uses it and has an iTunes account. This is all the more reason as an artist to make sure your songs are in the iTunes store.
I’ll cut straight to the point. To get on iTunes you have to go through a middle man. iTunes won’t except music straight from the artist. You have to go through a distributor. Unfortunately thats how the music business works. The one I recommend as the absolute best is TuneCore. TuneCore
allows you to put single tracks or full albums on iTunes. Its the only service I know of that allows you to submit single songs to iTunes and it costs next to nothing . Another option is going through a site like CD Baby. CD Baby is geared more towards having a full CD ready for release. With CD Baby, you’ll get your CD placed in the CD Baby web store, as well as getting your CD distributed to virtually every digital music distributor on the web. CD Baby costs a bit more and as far as I know still needs a hard copy of the CD whereas TuneCore allows you to just upload your tracks. Both are great options though.
I can’t stress enough how important it is to get your music in the iTunes store. As an up and coming artist this is a basic step. All tracks sold through iTunes are tracked through SoundScan and nothing speaks to the A&R’s of the world like seeing SoundScan sales. Its also an incredible way to make money while in turn making your music easily accessible to potential fans.
