Mixing Bass Guitar

Mixing Bass Guitar

Mixing bass can be a very frustrating process. What sounds good to you on your studio monitors can all of a sudden fall apart on your stereo or ipod. Most inexperienced engineers will boost the living hell out of the low end expecting their mixes to sound massive. You’ll find this leaves your mixes sounding muddy, flabby, muffled or all of the above. This is because getting the low end right in a mix is very challenging in the beginning. Your aim is to get a balanced mix not one that is way too low end heavy. The low end consists usually of the kick drum and the bass guitar. In this tutorial we’ll just be concentrating on mixing the bass guitar. Continue reading

I get asked a lot about the different software options that are out there for mixing and which are the best. To me the answer is whatever software you feel most comfortable with. For the most part they are all able to accomplish the same things its just more about the softwares workflow and what works best for you. There are an incredible amount of options out there. These pieces of software can be known as DAW’s, audio editors, mixing software, music editors, music mixing software ect…  It can get confusing so I figure id give a quick overview of the three I feel are most relevant. Setting Buffer Size

Setting Buffer Size

Just wanted to write a quick article on how to set your buffer size also known as H/W buffer size or ASIO buffer size. I feel this is something many people know very little about and it can play a big part in how much power your system has for mixing. In your DAW buffer size is determined by samples. You’re likely to see numbers like 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048. Without getting too technical the smaller your buffer size the more CPU power the computer must use to process the audio. So then you say “Well then i’ll just set my buffer size high, no problem.” Not exactly. When recording you are going to want to set your buffer size as low as possible in order to avoid latency. Mix Buss

The mix buss setup is an extremely important part of the overall sound of your mix. By mix buss im referring to the master fader and the effects/inserts being used to process the entire mix. I have a basic setup that I use on most of mixes but certain plugins will be added or subtracted depending on the style of music. I’ll go into more detail about that later on in this article.
